Kofi Cockburn’s Jersey to be Retired by Illinois Basketball

Kofi Cockburn, the legendary center for the Illinois Fighting Illini, will return to Champaign on February 11 for a jersey retirement ceremony at State Farm Center during the No. 18 Illini’s game against UCLA. Cockburn expressed his excitement about returning, stating, “It feels like decades since I’ve been back to Champaign,” and acknowledged the honor of having his jersey raised, crediting his success to his staff, teammates, and the passionate fanbase. After declaring for the 2022 NBA draft and not being selected, Cockburn pursued a professional career overseas, currently playing in his third season for the Seoul Samsung Thunders in the Korean Basketball League after stints in the Japanese B.League.

In early 2024, Cockburn’s jersey was honored by being placed in the rafters of State Farm Center, a recognition of his significant contributions to the Illinois basketball program. Due to his commitments overseas, he was unable to participate in a formal ceremony like his former teammate Ayo Dosunmu. However, Cockburn is set to return to campus for the first time since leaving the program in 2022, marking a momentous occasion for both him and the university. As one of the most accomplished players in Illinois history, Cockburn earned the title of Big Ten Freshman of the Year during his inaugural season, where he averaged 13.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game, solidifying his impact on the program.
